Chapter Eighteen

Donavan Smith took particular care getting ready that evening. Nothing too flash, but not too casual either. A black pair of Armani jeans and a thick cotton DKNY white shirt. Labels were important to him; his clothes were one of his extravagances in life. He stared into the full mirror; he looked good... felt good.

He walked downstairs. Vicky stood at the hallway mirror, applying the finishing touches to her make-up. Too much, Donavan thought to himself.

The taxi arrived a little after seven and sped quickly through the exclusive roads of the Darras Hall Estate, home to the rich and famous, successful businessmen, TV presenters and Newcastle United footballers.

Five minutes later, they passed Newcastle International Airport and Donavan couldn’t help thinking of the trip to Spain the following week. He went over the plans in his mind, how he would find Bob Heggie, and what he would do when he got there. He thought about his strategy tonight, how he would be introduced to Bob Heggie’s ex-wife and her new husband and how he needed to take things slowly, one step at a time.

They would be dining at Rockafellas on the Quayside. Terry Miller owned the restaurant, a down-to-earth Newcastle man who had won a bizarre ‘fly on the wall’ reality TV show. The show had attempted to turn the contestants into chefs, with the best one, or rather the most likeable one, taking the spoils. The prize had been enough money to start a restaurant.

Donavan hadn’t seen the programme and wouldn’t even know Terry Miller if he stood in front of him. Vicky waxed lyrical about how addictive the show had been and couldn’t wait to meet the main man.

The impressive sight of the illuminated Tyne Bridge came into view and Donavan asked the taxi driver to pull over.

Vicky looked across, slightly bemused.

“We’re a bit early, let’s have a quick drink.”

“But, Don, we said we’d be there at...”

Don held up a hand and whispered in her ear, “I said, let’s get a fucking drink.”

He kissed her delicately on the cheek and then brushed his lips across her neck, feeling a slight tremor shudder through her. He loved the power he held over her. He knew exactly what she liked, knew exactly what she wanted to hear, and how she wanted to be controlled. “And, if you’re a good girl tonight, there’s more where that came from.”

She smiled and Donavan leaned over with a twenty-pound note for the taxi driver. The meter read nineteen pounds fifty. “Keep the change, pal.”

The taxi driver stole a cheap look in the rear-view mirror and Donavan couldn’t help smirking as he left the car.

Donavan made his grand entrance into Rockafellas twelve minutes late. Vicky waved at a couple sitting by the window, and a waiter escorted them across. The handsome-looking couple stood politely as Vicky made the introductions. Stephen seemed a little nervous, even uncomfortable. About to partake in an evening’s forced pleasantries with two strangers he’d never met before. Donavan would work on him first.
